snippet: This survey will be used this year, between July and August 2024, for a sampling effort to assess the presence or absence of the newly discovered invasive species, New Zealand mudsnail (NZMS), using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis from Lake Tahoe tributaries. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is organismal DNA that can be found in the environment. Environmental DNA originates from cellular material shed by organisms (via skin, excrement, etc.) into aquatic or terrestrial environments that can be sampled and monitored using new molecular methods. Thanks to support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Lake Tahoe Basin Aquatic Invasive Species Program Partners, 300 eDNA samples will be collected from tributaries within the Lake Tahoe Basin and Lower Truckee River. Sampling locations are those that are: near a known infestation of NZMS, high traffic recreation areas, known habitat of sensitive species, culturally important sites, and areas likely to have greater environmental or economic impact.
